Why Windows and Android Can't Open iPhone HEIC Photos

When iPhone users email or AirDrop photos to a Windows PC or Android phone, the recipient is frequently greeted with an unrecognized `.heic` file that Windows Photo Viewer refuses to open.
The Patent & Licensing Barrier
The HEVC (H.265) compression standard is patented by licensing pools (MPEG LA, HEVC Advance). While Apple baked hardware decoder licenses into their A-series chips, Microsoft does not include the HEVC Video Extension in base Windows installations to avoid paying licensing fees on every PC sold.
Microsoft requires users to purchase the "HEVC Video Extensions" from the Microsoft Store for $0.99 or convert photos to universal JPG.
