Starting with iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra, Apple introduced HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) as the default photo format across all iPhones and iPads.

How HEIC Works

HEIC is based on HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format), defined by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). It uses the modern HEVC (H.265) video codec compression algorithm to compress still photographs.

Compared to traditional JPEG compression (dating back to 1992), HEIC reduces file size by approximately 50% while offering superior dynamic range, 16-bit color depth, and native support for image sequences like Apple Live Photos.

The Compatibility Dilemma

Because HEVC requires specialized codecs and licensing, many legacy Windows versions, older Android devices, and website upload forms cannot decode `.heic` files natively. Converting your photos to JPG remains the most reliable solution.
