What is a HEIC File?

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It is the file format chosen by Apple starting with iOS 11 to store photos captured on iPhones and iPads. HEIC uses modern High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC / H.265) compression algorithms to deliver photos with equal or superior visual fidelity compared to standard JPEG, while consuming roughly 50% less storage space.

Despite its efficiency advantages, HEIC is not universally supported. Many Windows applications, Android devices, website upload forms, and older software refuse to open .heic files. Converting your photos to JPG restores universal compatibility across every computer, phone, and online platform.

HEIC vs. JPG Comparison

HEIC Format
  • ~50% smaller file size than standard JPEG.
  • Supports 16-bit color depth (versus JPG’s 8-bit).
  • Supports image sequences (Live Photos, burst shots).
  • Limited compatibility outside the modern Apple ecosystem.
JPG / JPEG Format
  • 100% universal compatibility on all devices and software.
  • Supported by every web browser and operating system.
  • Standard format required by government and job portal forms.
  • Easy sharing across Windows, Android, Mac, and Linux.

How to Stop iPhone from Taking HEIC Photos

If you prefer your iPhone to shoot standard JPEGs automatically so you never have to convert them, follow these quick steps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap Camera.
  3. Tap Formats at the top of the menu.
  4. Select Most Compatible instead of High Efficiency.

Note: 4K 60fps video and 1080p 240fps slow-motion require High Efficiency mode.

HEIC to JPG FAQs

Clear, concise answers to common questions about Base64 decoding, encoding, and specifications.

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple’s proprietary image container format based on HEVC (H.265) compression. Introduced in iOS 11, it preserves higher image quality at roughly half the file size of traditional JPEG files.
