Tipping customs vary drastically across global cultures. What is polite in New York may be seen as confusing or even offensive in Tokyo.

Western Europe (France, Italy, Germany, Spain)

Service is legally included in the bill (`service compris`). Leaving small change or rounding up to the nearest 5 or 10 Euros for good service is appreciated, but 20% tipping is not expected.

Japan & South Korea

Do not tip. Excellent service is considered a matter of professional pride and standard duty. Leaving extra money on a table may result in the server running down the street to return your "forgotten" cash.

United Kingdom

Many London restaurants add an optional 12.5% service charge to the check. If included, you do not need to add extra.
